CRPS stands for complex regional pain syndrome. This form of chronic pain causes unexplained pain in the arms or legs. The pain can be so severe that it impacts what you’re able to do and how you live your life.

Our expert team at Athens Ketamine Center specializes in ketamine infusion therapy for a multitude of illnesses and disorders, including CRPS. If you need a solution for your chronic pain, ketamine therapy could be the answer.

What is CRPS?

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) is a disorder that causes chronic, unbearable pain in one of your arms or legs. It usually only affects one limb; however, in some cases, it may spread to another limb. The pain may also spread to the foot or hand of your affected limb.

The causes of CRPS are relatively unknown and unexplained, but it seems to develop after an injury or surgery. In some cases, it can also occur if following a heart attack or stroke. The pain from CRPS is much more intense and severe than the initial injury.

Although pain is one of the primary symptoms of this disorder, there are other symptoms you may experience in your affected extremity, including:

  • Change in the skin color or texture
  • Temperature changes
  • Swelling
  • Joint stiffness
  • Problems with coordination
  • The feeling of pins and needles
  • Tremors and muscle spasms
  • Noticeable changes in hair or nail growth.

Sometimes, CRPS goes away on its own or can last for months to years. Treatment options focus on managing your pain, which may include ketamine as well as other types of treatment.

How can Ketamine Treatments help CRPS?

Ketamine is an anesthetic agent used mostly for sedation in surgical procedures. When given in smaller doses, it promotes a feeling of relaxation. However, it has been shown to have many other uses, such as managing chronic pain from CRPS.

Ketamine works directly in your body to decrease pain. It blocks specific neurotransmitters at the NMDA receptors. By blocking these neurotransmitters, ketamine allows your brain to make new neural pathways, moving past any damage from whatever caused your CRPS.

At Athens Ketamine Center, we offer IV ketamine therapy in our comfortable offices. Patients receive treatment in a private, relaxing room under the watchful eye of our physician, nurse anesthetic, and staff.
